Whitcliffe Mount Earns Spot in Top 50 Most Improved Schools

Students and staff at Whitcliffe Mount, a SHARE academy, Cleckheaton are celebrating being named in the top fifty most improved schools in England in 2023/24 according to the rankings published by The Excellence Hub in November 2024. Rebecca Hesmondhalgh, Headteacher, said “We are very proud of the progress made by all our students and of the journey that the school has been on in the last two years. Students who sat their examinations in the summer of 2024 worked incredibly hard and deserved all that they achieved; they gained places in a range of aspirational sixth forms and colleges and have bright futures. The school is delighted to have been ranked in the Top 50 most improved schools and it has been lovely to share this news with our students, parents/carers and staff”. Whitcliffe Mount is the only school in Kirklees Local Authority, West Yorkshire to have been named in the Top 50 list in the academic year of 2023/24.

Luke Bowers, CEO of The Excellence Hub, said: “There has been a lot of news coverage following the DFE publication of the 2024 KS4 results, highlighting those schools (rightly so) who have achieved really high Progress 8 scores. I think it is also important to recognise that for some schools the journey is as important as the destination. I would therefore like to congratulate the team at Whitcliffe Mount School for making significant progress in the last 12 months and for being one of the top 50 most improved schools in England. Well done!"

The school has been celebrating the notable progress and the strong outcomes achieved, and attribute the swift improvement made to their focus upon a compelling sense of BELONGING, aspiration and high expectations of all. The new vision of ‘Together, we are proud to be our best’ is embedded in everything that the school does so that its students are not only successful academically but feel happy, supported and valued in all aspects of school life.

Students leaving Whitcliffe Mount in 2024 achieved some impressive results and gained a place at their post 16 provider of choice. Some of them have shared a summary of their time at school and what they are doing now. This includes our highest achieving students and those who made the greatest progress from KS3 to KS4.

"I have loved my time at Whitcliffe Mount and I’m grateful for the support and passion of all my teachers. With their help I was able to achieve results that I was incredibly proud of. I also got to experience some great opportunities like playing a lead in the school play and travelling to Krakow. I made so many memories which, along with my achievements, I carry on to the next stage of my education. I am now studying A-level Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Core Maths at Greenhead College, Huddersfield. The difficulty has definitely stepped up, but I am enjoying the challenge and can’t wait to start visiting universities in the summer."

Rohan Hunter-Pickles

Rohan achieved 4 x 9’s, 2 x D*, 2 x 8’s, 2 x 7’s in his GCSE’s.

"I am very proud to be a former student of Whitcliffe Mount Academy. The GCSE grades I achieved were the result of 5 years' hard work, excellent teacher support and much valued after school revision sessions. It was always clear to me that the teachers wanted you to succeed. I have great memories of my time at Whitcliffe Mount, from taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme to geography field trips and the year 11 Prom. Most of all, I will remember the friends I made and the great teachers I met along the way. I am now studying A-Levels at Greenhead College and continue to value the principles of Whitcliffe Mount - to be our best, to belong, to achieve and to aspire. Whitcliffe Mount has helped shape who I am today."

Oliver Rouse

Oliver achieved 4 x 9’s, 3 x 8’s, 1 x 7, 1 x 6 in his GCSE’s.

"Enjoy. Achieve. Celebrate. The school has really lived up to its old motto. I have genuinely enjoyed my time at Whitcliffe from the incredible school trips, including the eventful trip to Paris and the Barcelona sports tour, both of which pale in comparison to a wet and windy day out at Hornsea with the Geography department. The fun didn't stop there though, with Nerf gun wars in English (don't ask) and a whole host of gory, gross practical’s in science. I am buzzing about my results. However, that is just a bonus because I have learnt so much more than the GCSE curriculum at Whitcliffe. So, I'd like to give a big thank you to all my teachers who've supported me over the last 5 years. I wouldn't have done nearly as well without your support, and you've all meant so much to me. The dedication that my teachers have shown by putting on hours of revision classes throughout Year 11 has allowed me to achieve the grades necessary to go on to study Chemistry, Biology, History and Core Maths at Greenhead College, however, it has truly been an honour and a privilege to wear a Whitcliffe Mount uniform, and I'll never forget it."

Zoe Worsnup

Zoe achieved 5 x 9’s, 4 x 8’s in her GCSE’s

"I’ve enjoyed my time at Whitcliffe Mount Academy and am really pleased with my GCSE results, which have helped me progress to study A levels in my favourite subjects. I’m thankful for my teachers who have helped me to achieve my best."

Eva James

Eva achieved 5 x 9’s, 2 x 8’s, 1 x 7, 1 x 6 in her GCSE’s
